Lunar III

Lunar III gold coins - the Australian series dedicated to the Chinese horoscope

The gold coins of the Lunar III Series are valuable investment coins, a series with timeless appeal, prized by collectors and investors alike.
Following the great success of the Lunar Series I and II, the Australian Perth Mint decided to continue the tradition linked to Chinese culture. All Lunar Series are designed to celebrate the ancient Chinese calendar. The first, called Lunar I, was issued by the fine Australian mint in 1996. With the beginning of the Year of the Rat on 25 January 2020, the first Lunar Series III coin was released, dedicated to this meaningful animal.

Lunar III Series gold coins, an oriental history

The history of Australia's Lunar Series III gold coins starts way back. These coins, like the Lunar I and Lunar II Series, are linked to the Chinese astrological calendar. The first Lunar III coin was minted in January 2020, the year of the Rat, an animal believed in ancient times to be a protector and bring material prosperity.

The Chinese calendar, mainly used for traditional festivities, is an ancient lunisolar calendar, which some date as far back as 2697 B.C. It incorporates elements of both the solar and lunar calendars and was officially used in China until 1912, when the monarchy was abolished and the Gregorian calendar was adopted.

In the Chinese language, each year is assigned a name composed of a celestial root, with a deep symbolic meaning now lost in time, and an earthly branch. There are twelve terrestrial branches, each of which is associated with an animal of the Chinese zodiac: mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

The twelve animals of the zodiac are related to the daily life of the ancient Chinese or represent important animals in traditional culture.

The ox, horse, goat, rooster, pig and dog are six of the domestic animals historically reared by the Chinese population. They are also linked to the traditional conception of home and the idea of wealth. The other animals, the mouse, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake and monkey are symbolic animals from Chinese tradition and mythology.

The characteristics of the Lunar III Series gold coins

All Australian Lunar Series III investment coins are 999.9/1000 pure 24-karat gold. These gold coins, in addition to their symbolic significance linked to Chinese tradition, are an important and safe investment. In fact, gold is a true safe haven asset for any investment portfolio.

On the reverse of these formidable gold coins we find one of the animals of the Chinese horoscope. The Lunar III series started in 2020 with the Year of the Rat, later, 2021 was the Year of the Ox.

The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Great Britain and the Commonwealth. The edge of the coin bears the inscription ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA, together with the coin's face value, purity and the gold symbol (AU). The sovereign is also featured on the iconic Australian Kangaroo coins.

Interesting facts about Lunar Series III coins

Each animal represented on the Australian Lunar III Series coins has a distinguishing feature that represents its symbolic meaning.

The rat: the first animal of the zodiac, it has wisdom as its main characteristic and is related to the saying "wisdom without industriousness leads to triviality". According to Chinese mythology, the order of the animals in the ancient zodiacal calendar was decided by a great race across a river and it is said that it was the rat that first jumped onto the river bank, deceiving its archenemy (the cat) and before taking a ride on the back of the ox.

The specific traits that distinguish animals of the zodiac also distinguish people born in the same years. Those born in the Rat years will therefore be intelligent, versatile, kind and resourceful people. Being the first sign of the Chinese twelve-year cycle, Rats are leaders and conquerors, hard workers, organised, meticulous and strong-willed. The charm of a mouse, the alchemy he is able to create with those around him, even his manipulative art if you like, make him a born salesman, obstinate but trustworthy.

The Ox: this is the second animal of the Chinese zodiac. The Ox or Buffalo is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. This powerful sign has the qualities of the reliable, calm and far-sighted leader. Like the animal of the same name, the Buffalo is incredibly patient, tireless in work and able to tolerate any fatigue without complaint. People born under the influence of the Buffalo are kind, good-natured, logical, positive, full of common sense and with their feet firmly planted on the ground. Security is their first concern in life and they are prepared to work hard to create stability for themselves and their family.
