Belgian Gold Francs: History and Characteristics of the Marengo

Belgian Francs gold coins, also called Marengo in the 20 Francs version, are famous rare coins issued by the prestigious Royal Belgian Mint. Belgium did not start minting its own currency until 1892, since its independence from the Netherlands dates back to 1830. The first Francs showing King Leopold I of Belgium were issued from 1831 to 1865. His successor Leopold II appeared on coins from 1869 until his death in 1909. Under the reign of King Albert I Belgian gold francs were issued only once in 1914.
