On the reverse is the effigy of the American bison Black Diamond. Black Diamond was a North American bison weighing 1550 pounds, the main attraction of the New York Zoo in the late 19th century.

Around the buffalo are engraved the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM (From many one), IN GOD WE TRUST, which has appeared on US gold coins since 1908, the face value ($50), the weight of the coin (1 OZ) and the purity title (.9999 FINE GOLD).
